NWMCA was established after the passing of the Washington State Medical Marijuana Act, which was created to allow the use of medical marijuana to treat terminal or debilitating conditions. The Washington State Medical Marijuana Act was designed to assist seriously and terminally ill patients. This act does not protect those who want to use marijuana recreationally, or those who feel they would benefit from marijuana use, but do not qualify under state law. Under the Washington State Medical Marijuana Act, the cultivation of marijuana for medical use is legal, but it is illegal for the patient to sell, give away, or distribute the marijuana.
